Something Fiction describes themselves as an experimental project from three different musicians from San Antonio. They combine electronic synths with ethnic and acoustic instruments and lofty vocals. Their first EP called “Botany” can be downloaded for free on BandCamp.
The first song on “Botany” is called “A.S.C.” and might be my favorite song on the album. It’s only about a minute and a half long, but it’s totally solid. The next song, “The Sky” seems to try a bit to hard, but that might be the point.
“Japanese Sunrise” is beautiful. It’s an instrumental track and it seems to have a really great sense of emotion and sparseness. This is what electronic projects tend to be best at. Humans don’t think with words natively, so it makes sense that instrumental music could better approach actual emotions. This is why classical instrumentalism is one of the most respected genres, and the advent of computers and technology has freed our ability to create exponentially. Something Fiction really begins to do a great job of tapping into emotions on this track.
The vocals get a pretty interesting treatment on “Lucid Dream Machine”, as they should. Lucid dreaming is one of the most fascinating concepts of human psychology. The rest of the album continues in much the same way. This band is full of interesting sounds, and emotional arrangements. You should find some time to listen to them alone and possibly in the dark. The more cave-like your situation, the better. This music has the potential to really speak to you.
