Bad Breaks is really great! This self proclaimed and still unsigned “indie rock project” from your very own San Antonio is the solo work of Chuck Kerr from We Leave At Midnight, The Tiago Splitters, and Black Magic And The Full Expose
This band is very obviously influenced by Spoon, and I thought that before I saw Spoon actually listed in their influences section. At least they’re open about it. It’s important for bands not to deny their influences. Every new band is essentially an interpretation of a previous work.
You can get a whole eight track album for free on Bad Breaks’s BandCamp page, which is also conveniently linked to their Facebook.
The opening track, “Victoria”, is pretty catchy and easy to listen to. The second track, “Got A Mind”, is much more interesting, although less immediately consumable. Track four appears to have taken the most work, featuring vocals, drums, piano, guitar, percussive claps, as well as tenor and alto saxophones. It paid off though, and “Let Me Tell You Something True” is one of the strongest tracks on the album.
Kerr wrote all these songs himself, and recorded them in Studio A at Trinity University for KRTU 91.7 FM Indie Overnight with the assistence of Marcus Rubio, Alex Wash, Matt Thomas, Ryan Teter, Will Aufricht, Carly Garza, and others.
If you love Spoon but wish you had heard them before they become really commercially successful, you should check out Bad Breaks. It really makes me feel like I went back in time about ten years and discovered something destined for success.
